Ford: Environmentally Friendly and Ready to Race
The debut of the Ford Escape Hybrid could be called one of the longest vehicle launches in history. After a number of delays, the Dearborn-based automaker is finally bringing this sport-utility vehicle to market, and it looks as though it's worth the wait.
To prove the capabilities of this hybrid SUV, Ford had an Escape drive through Manhattan for 37 hours; it covered almost 600 miles on one tank of fuel. This equates to an average of 38 miles per gallon through hours of horrible New York traffic. Most impressive for an SUV.
When it goes on sale this summer, not only will the Escape Hybrid be the first hybrid SUV to hit the market, it will also be the first full-hybrid system to be produced in North America.
Although the Escape will be Ford's first hybrid on the market, it certainly will not be the last. Ford Motor Company officials announced that the Mercury Mariner—the new twin of the Escape—will be available as a hybrid in 2006. The company also is planning a hybrid version of its new midsize sedan, which will replace the aging Ford Taurus model line.
Pricing for the new Escape Hybrid has not been released, nor have official EPA fuel economy figures. Both should be announced in the next few months.
While Ford was being environmentally conscientious with the Escape Hybrid, it was quite the opposite with their other unveil at this year's show. Helping to celebrate the Mustang's 40th anniversary, Ford debuted the Mustang GT-R Concept.
This Mustang is pure race car, sporting a carbon fiber hood, a big rear spoiler, full roll cage, and a 440-horsepower aluminum block V8 engine. The Mustang GT-R was built at Saleen Special Vehicles, and was developed by the same folks responsible for the Ford GT.
Although Ford is still calling this a concept car, we wouldn't' be at all surprised to see it on the track very soon.
Lexus Unveils Luxury Sports Coupe Concept
Lexus debuted the LF-C concept sports coupe at the New York show, calling the aggressive, high-performance coupe an indication of the design direction that is being considered for the next generation of the IS 300.
The LF-C is a four-person coupe with a retractable hardtop that can be configured four ways: hardtop coupe, convertible, targa or speedster, with the top down and the windows in the up position. The top is stored in the trunk, through a rather small opening in the rear deck.
"For the next IS-Series to be a true force in the luxury-performance arena it will need to offer more models, more performance, and most importantly, more style" said Denny Clements, Lexus Group vice president and General Manager told the media in New York.
The LF-C is a very aggressive and sporty coupe design that sits low and wide, with wide wheel openings combined with a bold hood, front fascia, and large alloy wheels: 20 inch on the front, and 21 inch at the rear. The roofline stays high above the rear seats to create rear-seat headroom.
"We used a combination of convex and concave surfaces to control the balance of light and shadow on the car which creates this beautiful contrast of having sharp lines within the sculpted exterior surfaces," said Kevin Hunter, vice president of Calty Design Research, Inc.
The LF-C is powered by a high-output front-mounted V8 engine that drives the rear wheels through a 6-speed sequential automatic transmission. The steering wheel is similar to the wheel found in a Formula One race car, with the top portion of the wheel open to allow the driver an unobstructed view of the gauges. The center console runs the full length of the interior, dividing the four lightweight bucket seats. Two display panels on either side of the console sit low so the car feels very open.
Audi RSQ Sports Coupe to Star in I, Robot
Audi developed the RSQ Sports Coupe for the movie I, Robot and unveiled the car here in New York. In the film, actor Will Smith portrays a homicide detective in the year 2035; he will drive the RSQ Sports Coupe in the movie.

The RSQ is a futuristic mid-engine sports car that rides on spheres instead of wheels and tires, but is immediately recognizable as an Audi: it has the new Audi front end with single-frame grille. The RSQ doors are hinged at the rear and twist slightly as they open, similar to a butterfly folding its wings.
Audi design and model engineers completed the car in just ten weeks. The interior is as futuristic as the exterior; the steering wheel is open at the top and folds out of the instrument panel after the driver enters the vehicle.
New York also marked the North American debut of the new Audi A6, the first Audi to feature the company's new design theme with a large, prominent grille that drops down below the traditional front bumper line.
The side view of the A6 is dominated by three distinct lines that sweep up toward the rear, while the back of the car receives a fresh treatment including rear lights that are more rectangular than on the current A6. The A6 is the first Audi to offer optional dynamic adaptive light technology with bi-xenon headlights that follow the road to improve visibility through a corner.
The new A6 is powered by either a new 255-horsepower 3.2-liter V6 or a 335-horsepower 4.2-liter V8, with quattro all-wheel-drive standard with the 4.2-liter engine and available with the 3.2-liter engine. Both engines are teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The interior is a sporty design with a driver-focused cockpit, excellent ergonomics and a center console similar in design to the A8.
New Flagship From Acura
The next-generation RL luxury performance sedan made its world debut in New York as a prototype; however, when the final production version arrives this fall it's not expected to look much different.
This new RL features a slew of innovations, most notably what Acura calls Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). This unique system not only distributes power between the front and rear wheels, it adjusts torque between the rear wheels to provide "precise cornering performance."
This RL will be the most powerful vehicle Acura has ever produced. Under the hood is a 300-horsepower 3.5-liter VTEC V6 engine.
To discover places to exert this power and handling ability, the RL will feature North America's first real-time traffic system that will display road conditions in the navigation system. Twenty major metro areas are expected to be covered when the car goes on sale this fall.
All-New Land Rover
The next-generation Land Rover Discovery made its worldwide debut in New York, and not only does it sport a new look, it has a new name in North America: the LR3 (Discovery 3 in the rest of the world).
Completely redesigned, the LR3 features a grille reflecting the heritage of the flagship Range Rover. The LR3 is designed to provide excellent on-road manners while living up to Land Rover's legendary off-road prowess.
Highlights of this new SUV include permanent four-wheel drive, independent electronic air suspension, a six-speed automatic transmission and a 4.4-liter 300-horsepower V8 engine (borrowed from Jaguar). The LR3 also features a new system called Terrain Response. By simply selecting one of five terrain settings with a rotary switch, the traction systems are optimized for that type of surface.
Seating is available for seven adults, and both the second and third row fold flat for versatile cargo carrying abilities. The roof design features three glass panels, including one sunroof.
Jaguar Adds Long-Wheelbase XJ
Jaguar revealed the 2005 XJ Long Wheelbase Sedan in dramatic fashion, using the vehicle's platform to produce the stunning Jaguar Concept Eight. Finished in "Purple Haze," a one-off color that combines cherry and black, and the powerful and sporty character of Concept Eight is emphasized by the 21-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels and chrome gills behind the front fenders. The gills are an interesting and functional design element; they improve flow to the rear of the car and work as heat extractors for the engine compartment.
The roof features a full-length piece of darkened glass, surrounded by a strip of red LED lighting that adds a red glow to the ambient interior lighting.
Concept Eight is not a mobile office; it features traditional English luxury to the highest degree. The rear seats are power-reclining lounge seats, separated by a center console that extends to the front of the passenger compartment.
The 2005 XJ Long Wheelbase sedans will go on sale for the U.S. market in September, with additional interior room coming from a 5-inch increase in the wheelbase.
Jaguar also showcased improvement to the S-TYPE and XK Series cars for 2005. The 2005 S-TYPE receives subtle yet extensive design changes to the exterior, including crisper look to the front end and bolder proportions at the rear. The redesigned hood is aluminum to improve weight distribution. Panel fit is tighter throughout the car.
The XK Series also receive subtle but significant upgrades for 2005 with a lower front profile, new side sills and new wheels. The XK8 grille receives a full-width splitter, while at the rear of the car gets larger dual exhaust outlets. The high-performance supercharged XKR versions receive a new mesh grille, quad exhaust outlets and a larger rear spoiler.
Volvo Debuts Three Special Vehicles
A Volvo XC90 replica constructed out of LEGO modeling bricks was unveiled at the New York show, drawing attention to a partnership between Volvo Cars of North America and LEGOLAND California. The partnership promotes driving safety and family values.
LEGO Master Model Builders, who maintain all of the LEGO brick models at LEGOLAND California, constructed the XC90 replica, starting production in January 2004.
Volvo also debuted a special pop art version of the V50 that received a complete makeover from artist Romero Britto, highlighting Britto's artistic style which combines bright colors, unique patterns and heavy outlines in a playful nature.
The V50 painted by Britto will be auctioned later this year, with the proceeds benefiting the charity Best Buddies, a non-profit organization that works to enhance the lives of persons with intellectual disabilities.
The third car showcased by Volvo in New York was the YCC (Your Concept Car) that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. The YCC is the result of a project management team consisting of five women; the three chief designers were also women.
The team was charged with developing a concept car that would win the approval of independent female professionals—the YCC is the result.
MINI Blows its Top
It's a good thing it was a sunny day in New York when MINI decided to debut its new convertible outdoors. Always trying to be a little different, this new little convertible—the smallest sold in the U.S.—made quite the entrance, arriving at high speed and spinning to a halt in front of the assembled journalists.
The new MINI Convertible will be available as either the base model or S, which features a supercharged 163-horsepower engine.
The MINI's fully automatic top opens in just 15 seconds and is styled to emulate the shape of the hardtop when closed. A unique feature is an integrated sliding top that can be opened up 15 inches while driving.
The Z-folding mechanism folds the top compactly behind the seats, where it stows without a tonneau cover. The convertible also features a heated glass rear window.
Tops will be available in blue, green and black. Eleven exterior colors are available, including two that are exclusive to the convertible.
The MINI Convertible will go on sale later this summer. Prices have not yet been released; however, according to Jack Pitney, vice president of MINI USA, convertible prices should be around $5,000 more than the comparable hardtop.
New Direction for Buick
General Motors gave a glance at the future of Buick with the debut of an elegant 4-seat convertible concept called the Velite. Part of what is being called the revitalization of Buick, Velite is built on the company's new global architecture, called the Zeta platform. This platform has been designed for use in larger, rear-wheel-drive luxury cars. No production vehicles have been built using this platform yet.
"Velite is a new expression of Buick's longstanding heritage in understated yet sophisticated design," said Anne Asensio, executive director of GM Advanced Design. "While certainly an expression of premium American style, the Velite's impressive stance and overall presence emphasize a sumptuous driving experience that further pushes Buick on to the center of the world stage of luxurious touring cars."
Cadillac Adds 2005 STS
The all-new 2005 STS marks Cadillac's return to the luxury performance segment. The STS is based on the Sigma architecture, which is also the platform for the CTS and CTS-V sedans.
At first glance the styling bears a strong resemblance to the CTS sedan, but the STS definitely has its own distinct look with a softer, smoother edge to the sharp lines so definitive of the CTS design. The STS features an overall look that reinforces the fact that it will live up to the promised performance potential.
The STS is Cadillac's first rear-wheel-drive entry in the luxury performance segment in more than 25 years, and will be the nameplate's first all-wheel-drive offering for the segment. STS will be powered by either the 320-horsepower 4.6-liter Northstar V8 or a 255-horsepower 3.6-liter V6, with all-wheel-drive available on the V8 version. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.
The STS handling performance will benefit from four-wheel independent suspension with available Magnetic Ride Control and available ZF Servotronic II steering gear. Seven-spoke 17-inch wheels or optional nine-spoke 18-inch wheels are offered.
The interior features a tight, well-crafted look with Eucalyptus wood on the steering wheel, center console, instrument panel and doors. The seats are covered with Tuscany leather, and the dual-firmness design offer a firmer seat cushion and a softer upper seat for a luxurious feel combined with support.
Available technology will include keyless access with push-button start, smart remote start, and a Bose Studio Surround Sound Audio system.
Saab Debuts 9-7X Luxury SUV
Saab offered a first glimpse at the 9-7X, which will take the Swedish automaker into the luxury SUV category in the first part of 2005.
Promising the styling, performance, and driving characteristics expected from a Saab, the 9-7X will be powered by either a V8 engine expected to produce 300 horsepower, or an inline six-cylinder engine expected to produce 275 horsepower.
The 9-7X was developed from General Motors architecture that has already produced midsize SUVs such as the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the GMC Envoy. Both exterior and interior of the 9-7X incorporate classic Saab styling elements, including the grille, headlights, wraparound rear quarter glass windows, wheels, seats, instruments, and center stack.
Saab emphasizes that the vehicle will be driver-oriented, with an emphasis on the "sport" in sport-utility vehicle. Standard equipment includes all-wheel-drive, 18-inch alloy wheels, a rollover sensing system, automatic climate control, and a rear limited-slip differential.
Subaru Dresses Up with L.L. Bean
Four years ago Subaru formed a partnership with outfitter L.L. Bean, and the maker of all-wheel drive automobiles has had a lot of success with this brand name. For the 2005 model year, an L.L. Bean version will be available in the Forester line for the first time.
The first Subaru to wear the L.L. Bean brand was the popular Outback. An L.L. Bean version will also be available on the all-new 2005 Outback.
The L.L. Bean Forester will be introduced on the 2.5 XS trim. This special version will be distinguished from the rest of the lineup with 10-spoke alloy wheels, beige leather-trimmed seats embossed with the L.L. Bean logo, a power moonroof, self-leveling rear suspension and L.L. Bean badging on the rear liftgate.
"The partnership between Subaru and L.L. Bean has been a great success for Subaru, because it builds on the attributes that customers experience with both brands, including long-lasting premium quality, ruggedness with everyday comfort and compelling value," said Fred Adcock, executive vice president of Subaru of America, Inc.
Next-Generation Jeep Grand Cherokee Debuts
The all-new 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee was unveiled at Camp Jeep New York, an indoor course similar to those used for Jeep 101 events to showcase both the on-road and off-road capabilities of Jeep vehicles. Auto show attendees will be able to ride in various Jeep show vehicles throughout the show.
The redesigned Grand Cherokee arrived over the dirt hills of the course sporting an exterior that is unmistakably Jeep, with the size and styling that is expected from a Grand Cherokee.
The Grand Cherokee also continues to add innovative 4-wheel-drive systems, with three distinct systems for 2005: Quadra-Trac I full-time all-wheel drive; Quadra-Trac II with electronic-shift two-speed transfer case; and Quadra-Drive II that combines a full-time active transfer case with electronic limited-slip differentials.
For the first time, a 325-horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine is available. The standard engine is a 210-horsepower 3.7-liter V6; a 230-horsepower 4.7-liter V8 is also offered. All engines are combined with 5-speed automatic transmissions. New suspension and steering systems improve ride and handling.
Jeep also showed the 2005 Liberty, which will offer the first diesel engine in the midsize SUV segment. The Liberty will be available with a 2.8-liter common rail diesel rated at an estimated 160 horsepower with 295 lb-ft of torque.
Mercedes-Benz Stages North American and World Debuts
Mercedes-Benz debuted the CLS500 for the North American market, a unique car that combines the look of a coupe with four doors and passenger room of a sedan. The elegant styling extends to the interior as well, with leather, wood and engaging colors combining to create a pleasant environment.
Mercedes-Benz also hosted the world debut of the SL65 AMG, the exclusive, high-performance version of the SL roadster that is powered by the 6.0-liter twin-turbo AMG V12 that produces 604 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.
The SL65 shown at the New York International Auto Show was a special edition, painted in Silver Arrow Silver to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the debut of the legendary 300SL Gullwing. Only 50 of the commemorative SL65s will be built.
The second-generation 2005 SLK also debuted at New York for the North American audience, after the world debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The new SLK is more aggressive, sportier and more powerful, and will arrive in the U.S. next fall powered by a 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine.
The 2005 SLK features a more precise 6-speed manual transmission, 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, and an available sport suspension with lowered ride height.
The SLK continues to offer an automatic retractable hardtop, but it takes less time to lower or close, and takes up less trunk space when in the lowered position.
Maserati Racer for the Street
In an effort to remind the world of its racing heritage, Maserati brought the new MC12 to New York for its first time in the U.S. Unveiled last month in Geneva, the MC12 is a Grand Touring road car that is the basis of a GT racing car. It has been 37 years since Maserati raced in an FIA GT championship.
In order for a race car to participate in an FIA GT race, twenty-five street versions of the race car must be sold. The gorgeous MC12 is powered by modified version of the V12 engine that powers the Ferrari Enzo. With 630 horsepower, the MC12 reaches 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds with a top speed in excess of 200 mph. Don't rush to your Maserati dealer just yet—there are currently no plans for any of the 25 street versions to be sold in America.
A car you will find at a Maserati dealer is the new GranSport. Based on the Maserati Coupe, the GranSport features improved aerodynamics, special exterior and interior trim, and 19-inch wheels inspired by those found on the Trofeo Championship race cars. Power has been increased from 390 horsepower found in the standard Coupe to 400 horsepower. The V8 engine is teamed with Cambiocorsa 6-speed electro-hydraulic transmission that is shifted via paddles on the steering column.
Maserati, along with parent company Ferrari, hosted the annual Gala Preview of the New York Auto Show. The event raises money for the East Side House Settlement. A collection of vintage Maserati and Ferrari race cars were on display for attendees, thrilling the crowd as each was started and revved up. A wonderful sound to behold.
Sport Sedan From Infiniti
The luxury brand of Nissan unveiled a concept of the next-generation M45 performance sedan. While the current M45 never seemed to fit with the styling of the rest of the Infiniti lineup, this new one is spot on. With sporty lines and a front grille that is more in line with the look of the flagship Q45, the M45 concept provides a good indication of what the final production M45 will look like when it goes on sale as a 2006 model next spring.
Built on an enhanced version of the FM (Front Mid-Ship) platform used by the G35, the M45 Concept is powered by Infiniti's 340-horsepower 4.5-liter V8 engine. The platform is designed to use the G35's 3.5-liter V6 as well.
Some of the unique features include a Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system, which alerts the driver of unintended lane departure; a surround audio system with 14 speakers, 5.1-channel decoding with two personal speakers mounted in each front seat; brake-operated pre-crash front seat belts, and an Infiniti Intelligent Key system with push-button start.
The M Concept also has aluminum doors, hood and decklid—a first for Infiniti.
The Q45 sedan also features a number of improvements for 2005 and was shown here in New York. Changes for the 2005 model year include a revised, more aggressive exterior, standard active-damping suspension and a freshened interior with new sport contour front seats and a new instrument cluster. The 2005 Q45 goes on sale in July.
Nissan Showers New Xterra in New York
The boldly restyled 2005 Nissan Xterra drove onstage at the New York International Auto Show caked with mud, and was immediately showered by hundreds of gallons of water before the assembled journalists.
The second-generation Xterra continues the style of the original, and according to Nissan also continues the original theme: "Everything that you need, and nothing you don't." The new chrome grille draws from the style of the Nissan Armada full-size SUV; the functional roof rack of the original Xterra continues to play a prominent role in the SUV's style statement.
The new Xterra receives a 250-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 with the choice of a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission, and is available in either 2-wheel or 4-wheel-drive. The interior of the Xterra offers additional room, with improved rear-seat headroom and legroom. The cargo area features a channel system in the floor to secure large items, and is designed for easy cleanup.
For 2005 Nissan will also add the Altima SE-R, powered by a 250-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 with performance-tuned suspension, 18-inch forged alloy wheels, sport seats with perforated leather seat inserts, and a three-pod center-mounted gauge package.
Kia Adds Spectra5 Hatchback to Spectra Line
Kia took the wraps off the Spectra5, a sporty 5-door hatchback with aggressive styling. "The Spectra5 was built to be the sportiest Kia ever," said Peter Butterfield, president and chief executive officer of Kia Motors America.
The sporty styling includes an aggressive front end with a black mesh grille, blacked out headlights, a deep front spoiler, fog lights, rear valance, 8-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels, and a rear spoiler. Interior styling has sport fabric on the seats and door panels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob with perforated leather, metal-look trim, and metal pedals.
The Spectra5 offers best-in-class passenger room and cargo capacity larger than the previous 5-door Spectra. Six airbags are standard, including front-seat-mounted side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.
Power comes from a 138-horsepower 2.0-liter engine with a standard 5-speed manual transmission. The suspension is sport-tuned, and a strut tower brace is added for improved torsional rigidity, the first strut tower brace offered in a Kia. Standard equipment for the Spectra5 includes air conditioning, AM/FM/CD audio system, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, heated outside mirrors, rear wiper, and a height-adjustable steering column. Spectra5 will go on sale in the U.S. during the summer of 2004.
Lincoln Hits Entry-Level Market
Ford's luxury brand has looked to its past to name its new sedan. Zephyr was first used on a Lincoln of the 1930s, and will be worn on the new 2006 model sedan. Designed to attract a younger buyer to the Lincoln brand, the Zephyr "teaser" that was unveiled here in New York gives a good indication of what the final production version of this sedan will look like.
The Zephyr is built on Ford Motor Company's CD3 midsize platform, tuned specifically for the Lincoln brand. This platform is used for the Mazda6 and will be the basis of the upcoming Ford midsize sedan that will replace the Taurus.
"The Lincoln Zephyr is a clear example of how we are able to bring exciting new products to the Lincoln stable by leveraging efficiencies throughout the Ford Motor Company organization. These great new products and the new customers they will attract are at the core of the Lincoln renaissance," said Darryl Hazel, Lincoln Mercury president.
From the classic grille to the wraparound rear taillights, the Zephyr is quite clearly a Lincoln. Exterior paint is a rich, golden color called Cashmere, while the interior is trimmed in exotic Harewood, chrome and fine leather.
The Zephyr will be powered by a specially tuned version of Ford's Duratec V6 engine mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Power will run through the front wheels; however, following the launch in late 2005, an all-wheel drive will be available.
Bentley Launches Updated Arnage
The ultra-luxury sedan from famed British marque Bentley gets a freshened look and a number of enhancements for the 2005 model year. The front fascia of the Arnage now features round headlights and revised hood lines, both of which give the sedan a similar look to the new Continental GT.
Inside, the Arnage gets a new dashboard top, fresh instruments and new DVD satellite navigation unit. All non-critical controls have been tastefully hidden behind veneered panels. The already outstanding ride quality and handling have been enhanced with a revised rear suspension.
Arnage sales have continued to do well, even with the recent introduction of competitors from Rolls-Royce and Maybach, and deliveries of the high-performance Continental GT will begin next month. Orders have already been taken for the first two years of production.
The 2005 Arnage will initially be available in R and T trims, with the long-wheelbase RL coming later in the year.
Suzuki Adds a Wagon
The Japan-based automaker has been having great success with what it's calling the "357" business plan—tripling business in five years by 2007. To achieve this plan, Suzuki will be launching nine new models in just five years. In New York the all-new Forenza Wagon was unveiled, the fourth of the nine new models. Preceding the new wagon were the Verona, Forenza sedan and the Reno compact.
"The Forenza Wagon is an important new vehicle for American Suzuki," explained Koichi Suzuki, president of American Suzuki Motor Company Automotive Operations. "Not only does it enable Suzuki to compete in the growing premium compact wagon segment, but it allows us to directly leverage the popularity of the fast-selling Forenza sedan, which played a key role in Suzuki's 22 percent sales increase for the first quarter of 2004."
The model that was unveiled in New York was actually a concept called the ChromaWagon, which features special wheels, leather interior, high-performance tires and square chrome exhaust outlets. The final production version of the Forenza Wagon will not be much different than the ChromaConcept.
Spyker Sports Cars Arriving in U.S.
The Spyker C8 Spyder is on display at the New York International Auto Show, and Spyker CEO Victor Muller announced the three Spyker models will go on sale in the U.S. later this year through a series of 13 dealers throughout the country.
Today's modern Spyker cars are hand built, ultra-high-performance, mid-engine, lightweight cars. The C8 Spyder is a two-seat roadster powered by a 400-horsepower 4.2-liter Audi V8 with fully adjustable stainless steel suspension. The lightweight bucket seats are covered in quilted leather. Because each car is built to the new owner's exact specifications, virtually any option is available, including an aluminum hardtop and 19-inch Lightweight Magnesium Aeroblade Propeller wheels.

The Morgan Aero 8 is a 2-seat sports car that combines a classic sports car design with modern technology to create what Morgan says is the lightest production V8-powered sports car in the world. The Aero 8 design features a long hood and swoopy fenders that wrap around the wheels. The driver and passenger sit low and far back in the chassis.
The Morgan Aero 8 has a high-tech aluminum chassis, traditional Ash wood body frame, and molded aluminum pedals. It is powered by a 4.4-liter BMW V8 engine mated to a 6-speed ZF manual transmission. The U.S. version of the car required the addition of a wider cockpit, driver and passenger airbags, and anti-lock brakes.
