Smells of conspiracy here in the U.S.
The oil co.'s have their fingers lining the auto industries pockets. Most little cars can't get over 40 mpg and even the hybrids are hard pressed to surpass fifty and you have to pay a premium for the technology. Two seat Smart car makes me laugh.....thing should get 60+ not 38. What's the point of buying it at those mpg? And the price of diesel is more than gas....sometimes by .30+ cents so if you do have a diesel and get better mpg's you pay more for fuel, so no gain. And diesel is less refined and cheaper to make...hmmmm.
They can make 70+ mpg cars here if they want...diesel, hybrid and I think gas too but big oil of course doesn't want it and none of the car magazines even mention it...maybe they get some hush money too?
Where there's smoke there's fire and I think this whole mpg thing is smoldering!

Blah, blah, blah...if the US really wants fuel efficient vehicles, we need to really look to Europe! For instance, the VW Polo 1.3L diesel would crush any current hybrid on the market...small liter diesels rule over there and are capable of staggering MPG! Talking close to 70-80 MPG! Hybrids have not caught on in Europe and probably never will, there are much more fuel efficient vehicles avaibile to their market. Same goes for trucks...bring a light duty diesel here as well! I have driven VW diesels for years, my 2006.5 Jetta has 117,000 and no major problems other than routine stuff. I consistently get 48 MPG with a near equal combo of highway and city driving. It is a 5-speed manual and really is fun to drive! My problem with nearly all the hybrids and electric vehicles is nearly all (I think Tesla and Honda VRX get a bye here) are just plain boring to drive! If I cannot shift it myself I don't want it! (Albeit, the Tesla has no gearbox, but have read it is actually a blast to drive...)
Anyway, the US could have these vehicles like they do in Europe and already sell many models there (Ford, I am talking about you) that would be awesome to have here! Just my 2 cents...

THIS IS NONSENSE. You can't compare cars fueled with electricity on a Gasoline based chart.
Electric powered car efficiency is all over the chart. Some get 38 miles on a charge and some near 100.
What's the cost of the recharge for that milage?
A chart of DPM (dollars per mile) is needed here.

Why don't you blend in the price of battery replacement on the hybrids? I think the economy would become self evident at that point. Hybrids are a stupid way for car makers to artificially increase mileage. If they actually succeeded and we now had millions more car batteries to dump, we would have a whole new problem to solve.
