I own a 98 subaru, 200,000mi on it and i've never had to fix anything but regular maintenance stuff (basically oil and brakepads), my father has a 96 accord with 275,000mi also doing only regular maintenance (oil and brakepads, plus the occasional long term maintenance like a timing belt and water pump every 100k), my mother wanted to own american and had an 04 Ford Taurus, which needed a new transmission and engine after 65,000 mi. You couldn't pay me enough to buy an 'american' car. It's not really about where it's assembled, after all, most toyotas are designed in japan, but assembled in the US, with US parts suppliers. The difference is in the engineering and quality control.
