Those worrying about fuel mileage need to drive the smart car to the Holiday Inn.  Safe and sound.

I've done 30 years of "Xtreme" winter travel, and I can say that a Ford F150 4wd/manual trans with a locker in the rear axle and positraction up front is a ferocious yet affordable beast.  Add a winch front and back, a simple topper and the right tires for the terrain, and you are good to go.  Most of the "huge truck" vehicles here would sink like a stone in too many types of terrain...and then what will pull them out?

The 1982 Toyota is the real deal......if you need more comfort you're not camping.  The picture here on my scooter was a ride from PA to Northern Minnesota with a tent lashed onto the back.  I rode down 6 miles of dirt rocky gravel potholed road to a lake and found a nice place to camp.....stopped the bike and had the tent up in 10 minutes.  Rode back out and found the nearest town and bought the case of beer and vodka and lashed it on the back and rode back to camp......that's 5 star camping.  Had I found a hot babe along the way I would have lashed her on the back too.

I'd love to get a Volvo C303 or a Kamaz 4911, but I think I'm gonna play it safe & get an M35A3 Cargo Truck.

Last Camping Trip I went on was Desert Storm, in an Army Air Conditioned Van, that was built from, I believe it was, a Tactical 2.5 Ton Truck.  I supervised an HR Computer Section for an Armored Cavalry Regiment.  We had to take turns using the Lap Top Computers, sent to us from our base in the US, in the van.  This was because our five ($17,000 each) HR TACCS Field Computer System's hard drives got destroyed by the powder fine sand in Saudi Arabia!  Later we found out it was because the $.50 Foam Air Filter was so Porous.  A typical lack of proper testing, under all possible conditions, before fielding new equipment throughout the Army!

Most of those vehicles are strictly for rich guys with too much money.  The four wheel campers are light and easy to haul around.  I prefer a diesel pick-up and a canvas tent with a wood stove.

I couldn't afford the fuel for it. I am still arguing with myself on whether i should get a pickup or not.

Many of the vehicles DO have immense creature comforts. The best source for more info is Expedition Portal (Google it for their site).  You will find info on all these, as well as Unimog, EarthRoamer, Provan Tiger, and a one of a kind, the EcoRoamer, which has open source plans and can be copied.
